Art and Garden Stroll in Edgartown
For all the sights and sounds that delight the eyes and ears of the Vineyard’s summer visitors, it is a rare event that brings pleasure to multiple senses simultaneously. But today, August 14, visitors to the beautiful gardens of the Decorator Show House in Edgartown will be pleased to hear the chirping of birds and smell the sweetness of the garden’s healthy blossoms as they stroll among the paintings, prints and sculptures of a great many Island artists.
Ashley Medowski Show at Saltwater
Ask about Keith Farm, one of Island artist Ashley Medowski’s new works, and she says, “It’s a serene picture you can dive into.”
Diving in is exactly what you want to do with Medowski’s mixed media assemblages, works you might call paintings-plus.
Keith’s Farm features in the foreground a three-dimensional mosaic stonewall made out of tiny beach stones; if you could just dive past it, you could get to that pond and ocean flirting from the background.
This Saturday night, August 8, is the second and final Oak Bluffs Arts District stroll of the summer. Among the many fine events and showings planned by the galleries and boutiques of Dukes County avenue is PikNik’s Urban Event, now in its second year.
Shaw Cramer Gallery today opens Repurposed, Recycled, the latest in its spotlight exhibitions.
Furniture, paintings, metal, glass, jewelry and collage by three Island artists and seven national artists combine to present an elegant collection of work composed of repurposed and recycled materials.
Wendy Weldon has painted on her used painting sandpaper, Rose Abrahamson created a collage and paint composition, and Laurene Krasny Brown combine gouache painted paper strips that form a quilt-like pattern.
Poetry Painted is the theme of a new art exhibition opening Sunday, August 2, with a public reception from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Treehouse Gallery in North Tisbury.
Featured is Paul Murray, who has embedded lines of poetry within his colorful acrylic paintings. Poets quoted include Rumi, William Carlos Williams, Pablo Neruda, Walt Whitman, Gerard Manly Hopkins and Emily Dickinson.
Shaw Cramer Gallery presents the spotlight show Color + Whimsy from July 31 through August 13. Island artists Karen DiMaura and Adele Schonbrun join seven national artists in a show filled with playful and colorful artwork. Handmade baskets, vintage bead jewelry, paintings and photography combine with painted wood and handbuilt clay sculptures to create this collection.
The show is in the upper gallery. Leslie Baker’s Landscape Paintings + Studies continues in the main gallery through August 6.
