Art Exhibit
West Tisbury artist Leslie Baker is exhibiting her large landscapes and plein air studies in oil throughout the month of October at the Chilmark Library.
One of the paintings displayed, titled Trying to Remember, recently won a jurors award at the Copley Society’s Summer Members’ Show in Boston.
Hewett Works Show
Vineyard Haven painter Edward Hewett will show his recent work at the Cary Library in Lexington, in a well-known exhibition program that features outstanding New England-area artists.
Some of the paintings have been exhibited on the Vineyard at the Dragonfly Gallery, the Chilmark Library and Featherstone Center for the Arts, and are in private collections in Boston and the Vineyard. Others are large, new work, not shown previously.
Susan Davy, co-owner of the Dragonfly Gallery in Oak Bluffs, recently presented a $500 check to Guinevere Cramer of Island Affordable Housing Trust. Island plein air artists donated a portion of the proceeds from sales during the gallery’s recent show, September Light on the Vineyard, which was matched by the gallery.
A photography exhibition called Time Stands Still, with works by Juleann VanBelle, will hang at the Chilmark branch of the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard through Oct. 9. The opening reception is Friday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 6 p.m.
A year-round Islander for over 30 years, Ms. VanBelle is known for her work as a community activist and a registered nurse; she is now employed as the Aquinnah town nurse.
The Tisbury School will host five traveling art exhibits during the upcoming school year, thanks to the Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard. This grant award has given the school the opportunity to bring quality museum reproductions to students and the public.
The size of the reproductions within the exhibit are remarkable, measuring up to 17 feet by 7 feet. Each of the exhibits will be housed in the main hallway of the school for one week and will be open to the public.
