Vineyard Haven artist Cindy Kane will be opening her studio from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, and Sunday, Dec. 20. The studio is located at 31 Sylvan avenue in Vineyard Haven; please call 508-696-8533 for directions or more information.

Talking Pictures

The North Water Gallery hosts photographer David Fokos for an artist talk on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. Now living in San Diego, Mr. Fokos is back on the Vineyard, where he is most well known for his square black and white photographs with long exposures, ranging from 20 seconds up to 30 minutes. These exposures filter out what Mr. Fokos calls visual noise to reveal the fundamental underlying forms of our world. All are welcome at the gallery on North Water street in Edgartown. For details, call 508-627-6002.

Open Studio

An artist’s studio should be a small space, Leonardo da Vinci said, because small rooms discipline the mind and large ones distract it. Small spaces do, however, present occasional storage issues.

With that in mind, artist Deborah T. Colter of Edgartown will be opening her studio to the public on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Through the effort of the Tisbury School librarian, Patricia Ryan, and a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Tisbury School is showcasing an exhibition, Pictures of America, which documents the history of America through major American artists and their work.

The posters not only feature famous paintings, but sculptures, photography and craft works. The exhibition will be on display for the month of November in the passageway between the school and the library.

Local Art in Boston

Edgartown artist Deborah T. Colter has two large-scale original paintings and a series of four works on paper with the developers of Post 390, an upscale Back Bay comfort food restaurant opening this month near the corner of Stuart and Clarendon streets. Post 390 is the latest project from the owners of Harvest in Cambridge and Boston’s Grill 23.
