A new exhibition, Con Brio, is open at Dragonfly Gallery in Oak Bluffs, with works by Jance Lentz, Don McKillop and Kyle Stevenson.

The title comes from a musical term meaning “with spirit.”

Mr. McKillop, an artist and as of this year the co-owner of the gallery, says of all the Dragonfly shows this summer, this one spans the widest spectrum of color palettes, styles, techniques and size.

“Jan, Kyle and I all paint with that same sense of spirit or vigor, even though our work is entirely different,” he said.

When the glossed ponies of The Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs halt their whirling prance, the expressions of the children mounted atop their wooden backs sour. The ride is over. But for Island artist Sandy Bernat, the slowing spin of the merry-go-round on a bright day earlier this summer marked her moment.

As the riders slid down the saddles, Ms. Bernat rushed into the ring to snap a photograph of the bridled horse heads, hooves and mystic aesthetic of America’s oldest operating carousel.

Inside Gossamer Gallery last Tuesday, Joan Merry pulled out a framed portrait to demonstrate the dire economic situation in Zimbabwe: the colorful image of a man sitting on a chair was painted on a paper “canvas” made from $25 million Zimbabwe dollar notes stitched together.

Boston Globe op-ed columnist Derrick Z. Jackson is on the Island for his photography exhibit, From Iowa to the White House.

It shows at Cousen Rose Gallery from Thursday through Sept. 11. Sponsored by the African American Museum of Boston, the exhibit is free and open to the public — but the photos, signed by Mr. Jackson, are for sale to benefit the museum’s youth programs. He will appear at the Oak Bluffs gallery on Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to meet visitors.

“All Vineyard”: Kib Bramhall Returns

Spotlight at Shaw Cramer

Through the Lens is the last show in the Spotlights 2009 series celebrating 15 years at the Shaw Cramer Gallery. Island photographers Karen DiMaura, Gary Mirando and Kathy Newman join Michael Beatty and Eric Jensen, each with their distinctive style. Photo silk-screened stoneware vessels complement spare images of the cranberry bog house and Lake Tashmoo. It’s about the artists personal vision.
