Underlying the peaceful scene at Cape Pogue Bay are an unknown number of unexploded practice bombs, dating to wartime years when the area was used for military training.

The Trustees of Reservations have added added a second beach trail at the popular 229-acre Chilmark reservation, tucked away off North Road with its woodlands and rocky beach. The new trail is 1,000 feet long and was 10 years in the making.

The 18-acre north shore Chilmark property was gifted to the Trustees of Reservations this summer through an estate of the Harris family. The conservation group plans to open the property to the public next year.
