Harold Walmsley, of the Oak Bluffs bakery of the same name, was quite the doughnut maker, according to Joseph Chase Allen in the June 23, 1967 Vineyard Gazette. Waxing euphorically about the confection generally, Mr. Allen posited that the hole of the doughnut was believed to be invented in New England by either a schooner captain hanging them on his wheel for convenience, an arrow shot through a settler’s snack, or a housewife using its absence to hasten its cooking.

In February at a Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Scott Dario made a proposal to begin trolley tours this summer, something that had wide support from pretty much everyone. Oak Bluffs has had an extensive history of wheeled travel, beginning when the Vineyard Grove Company opened the Highland House Hotel and built its own wharf to compete with the Oak Bluffs Land and Wharf Company’s new development. They used a horse drawn trolley to deliver boat passengers and their luggage directly to the Campgrounds.

A lot of attention will be paid, no doubt, to the Belmont Stakes in two weeks when bettors handicap the chances of the first Triple Crown contender in years. Horse racing may indeed be the Sport of Kings but in Oak Bluffs all eyes are on the sport of Presidents — bowling at the newest jewel of Cottage City.
