Flooding around Lagoon Pond laps at edge of iconic Bangs Shack. Mark Lovewell

Islanders hunkered down Saturday as a winter storm lashed the Island. Power outages were reported across the Island and between 10 and 15 inches of snow accumulated. The National Weather Service confirmed what many already knew; the Vineyard experienced blizzard conditions for four hours during the storm.

But by sunrise Sunday the snow was mostly over and the winds dying down, and Vineyarders emerged, many with shovels in hand, to take a look at the snowy Island.

at least 15 inches of heavy wet snow fell in this area. When it started and for a couple of hours it was mixed with rain. Wind was fierce snow horizontal for several hours. Kudos to the electric company for keeping us warm with just a brief outage less than 15 minutes.
