Chappaquiddick (Edgartown)
Derived from a Native American word meaning “separated island,” Chappy, as it is called, is located off the eastern end of Edgartown and accessed by a three-car ferry. There are about 100 year-round residents and many more seasonal homeowners. With more than 800 acres of public beach and conservation land, it draws saltwater fishermen, kayakers, and bird watchers. There is no commercial zoning.

The first CIA meeting will be called to order on Saturday, July 9 at 9 a.m. at the Chappy Community Center, with coffee and pastries starting at 8:30.

There was a brush fire on Chappy this past Sunday. The Chappy and Edgartown fire departments were quick to arrive, however, and less than half an acre between two homes burned. We are indeed fortunate to have these very capable volunteers at our disposal. Thank you.
Back in mid-April Captain Bob Gilkes retired from the Chappy ferry after two decades of ferryboat driving. His retirement party last week was as well attended as the annual ferry captain and crew appreciation dinner!

A boy recently fell into a zoo gorilla enclosure. This did not happen on Chappy — we have had neither zoos nor gorillas since the early seventies - but I find the story to be an interesting Chappy allegory.
Captain Bob Gilkes has retired from the Chappy ferry after faithfully driving the ferryboats for two decades, through fair weather and foul. The ferry crew will be hosting the Chappy Community Center potluck on Wednesday, June 1 as a testimonial to honor Captain Bob’s years of service to the Chappy community.

I am not someone that desperately needs to know or understand stuff. An ideal columnist, I am not. I prefer to look at the big picture, let the details sift through and settle in, and accept what remains as fact.
There was a dinosaur on the Chappy ferry this morning. The reason that I mention this is that a few years ago one of my granddaughters made it a point to tell me that I was incorrect in telling her that there are no dinosaurs now. She is right.

The Edgartown post office is now firmly ensconced in the old library at the top of Daggett street. Post office hours are: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
