A thin crescent moon appears low in the southwestern sky on Monday evening, under the bright planet Jupiter. Both celestial objects are in the zodiacal Scorpius. The two will look nice amid the light of twilight.

More Vineyarders will see the moon on Tuesday night when it appears higher in the southwestern sky. The moon will dominate the sky in the nights ahead, moving through Sagittarius into Capricornus. First-quarter moon is next Saturday.

Planets

The red planet Mars rises in the eastern sky soon after the sun sets in the west. The planet is easy to spot amid the stars of the zodiacal constellation Gemini. No other star in the east can compete with Mars and its brilliance. Mars continues to brighten into December.

The best show of planets is in the morning. An hour before sunrise, three planets can be seen in the sky. Prior to dawn, Mars is setting in the west. Saturn is overhead and Venus is rising in the eastern sky.

The ringed-planet Saturn rises in the east well after midnight. Saturn is in the zodiacal constellation Leo and close to Regulus, the principal star in that constellation known as a lion. By morning, Saturn has climbed high in the eastern sky.
