A thin crescent moon appears low in our southwestern sky tonight. The moon is one day old from New Moon phase and will appear thin and difficult to spot since it is so close to the horizon. More Vineyarders will see the moon on Saturday evening when it is both higher in the western sky and also lasts a little bit longer before setting.

In the nights ahead, the moon moves through Pisces, Aries and into Taurus. On Wednesday night the moon is gibbous and close to the star cluster Pleiades in the constellation Taurus.

Planets

The red planet Mars is high in the eastern sky after sunset. Mars, which has lost some of its brilliance in the last month, starts the night still readily visible. Mars is in amid some bright stars, still in the zodiacal constellation Taurus but getting closer to Gemini.

The ringed-planet Saturn appears near the eastern horizon after sundown. The planet rises with the evening. Saturn is in the zodiacal constellation Leo.

Two more planets are in our sky but they are up just before sunrise. The planets Venus and Jupiter are in the southeastern sky. The brighter of the two is Venus, in the constellation Capricornus, and is closest to the horizon. Jupiter is a short distance above and in the zodiacal constellation Sagittarius.
