Soprano Claudette Peterson, formerly with New York’s City Opera, and renowned bass-baritone David Kline, will present a master class for singers at the Martha’s Vineyard High School on Monday. Dan Murphy, director of music at the high school, arranged for the class to give interested students the opportunity to work with these world-class artists and to introduce them to Operafest 2008, a summer program for which Mr. Murphy will serve as choral conductor and accompanist.

Operafest 2008 is an intensive two-week professional training workshop for young promising singers in high school and early college years. Previously, Operafest has been held in Polentino, Italy, but this summer it will be held on Martha’s Vineyard.

Special discount rates are being offered to Vineyard students who may choose either to participate in the entire two-week program, or to perform choral music which requires less of a time commitment but still affords them the opportunity to work with the program’s distinguished faculty.

A concert by Ms. Peterson and Mr. Kline, accompanied by Broadway and big band trumpeter Rick Henley and Mr. Murphy, will be presented as a Monday Night Special at the Vineyard Playhouse on Monday, July 21.

Operafest will culminate in a fully staged and costumed student performance at Union Chapel on Saturday, July 26. Tickets for both events will be available through the Vineyard Playhouse box office.

The project is sponsored by Arts Inc. in association with the Vineyard Playhouse. Arts Inc. is a New Jersey-based organization dedicated to creating an active arts environment for young people, a mission strongly shared by the playhouse.
