The West Tisbury Congregational Church choir will perform Frostiana, Seven Country Songs, words by Robert Frost and music by Randall Thompson, in an upcoming afternoon concert also featuring pianist Dr. Lisa Weiss playing Twenty-Four Preludes, Opus 28, by Chopin, and Elite Syncopations and Pine Apple Rag by Scott Joplin.
The concert is set for Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. at the church in West Tisbury, with a reception following. The choir will be directed by Linda Berg. The suggested donation is $15, to benefit the choir’s Italy trip.
Ms. Weiss, a professor of music at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, made her debut at age 7 with the Boston Pops at the Hatch Memorial Shell, under the direction of Arthur Fiedler, playing the Haydn Concerto in D. Her earliest studies were with Leo Litwin, long-time pianist for the Boston Pops. Her other teachers have included Russell Sherman, Leon Kirchner and Leon Fleisher. She holds a B.A. from Harvard University, an M.M. from the Yale School of Music, and a D.M.A. from the Peabody Conservatory. She is a professor of music at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, where she teaches piano, directs the chamber music seminar, and co-directs the opera workshop. She recently served as chair of the department for six years before taking a sabbatical this year.
Ms. Weiss performs nationally and internationally, including an annual recital at the New York Public Library’s Donnell Auditorium series. She toured Italy to promote her compact disc, Millennium Crossings. Released several years ago by Capstone Records, it contains works for solo piano by contemporary Italian composers.
She has been a visiting artist at Tulane University, the Stephen Wise Music Academy in Los Angeles, and the Agder Conservatory in Norway.
Her studies with composer Leon Kirchner while at Harvard sparked her lifelong interest in new music. Currently she is at work on a program of contemporary works which she plans to present next year at various venues. She is also hoping to record the Chopin Preludes, and very much appreciates this opportunity to perform them to benefit the church choir.
