Samba Chocolate, a performance of original samba music, will be presented for the first time at Che’s Lounge this Sunday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Inspired by a cold, dark winter, Island musicians Bella and Daniel Waters composed some hot and spicy music for nylon-stringed classical guitar and for cavaquinho, an authentic Brazilian four-stringed soprano guitar of Portuguese ancestry.
“Quando penso Samba/Penso Chocolate,” (“When I think of Samba/It makes me think of Chocolate,”) sings Bella, who also is a professional baker, in Samba Chocolate, the song that gives the show its title. She says of the music: “We blend the ingredients of samba, jazz, bossa nova and blues.”
In the process of cooking Samba Chocolate, the two musicians also created a compact disc with six of their original songs. Most songs are in Portuguese with an English adaptation by Daniel Waters, who also is the poet laureate of West Tisbury. A special guest, Eddy Larkosh, will crank up the heat with his legendary harmonica.
Che’s Lounge is at 38 Main street in Vineyard Haven (the back alley). Admission is free. For information, please call 508-693-8555.
