Finding space in the shade to read, under a tree or a beach umbrella, is really its own reward. But there are even more rewards for kids who join the Vineyard Haven Public Library’s annual summer reading program. The program is now officially on for children of all ages. The theme this year is Wild Reads @ Your Library.
The library, like those across the Island and the state, is encouraging children to visit the library and sign up, keep a log of books read and attend wonderful programs. This summer there will be story times for children newborn to two as well as three to five, drop in crafts for children five to ten, Chess Club for children age six to high school, Wii games for children 12 and up and, for children 8 to 11, and monthly movie showings.
Special guest program will include musicians Jeremy Berlin and Julie Austin, authors Kate Feiffer and Stacy Hall, naturalist Gus Ben David, puppeteer Bella Felipe, and the story character, Wild Thing, from the Maurice Sendak story, Where the Wild Things Are.
Generous donations from Vineyard Haven businesses mean the library can offer incentive certificates to children to read, read, read. The Capawock theatre has offered movie passes for children and young adults, Bob’s Pizza has offered pizza slices, Murdick’s Fudge has offered slices of fudge, MV Bagel has offered bagels, Riley’s Reads and Bunch of Grapes bookstores have offered grand prize gift certificates.
Enjoy your summer reading.
