If you are a young fisherman, or the parent of same, the best advice for tonight is go to bed early. The 35th annual Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club trout tournament begins at first light at Duarte’s Pond in West Tisbury.
As many as 200 children are expected at the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank property off Lambert’s Cove Road. The pond was stocked yesterday with hatchery trout.
Organizers are counting on the fish to be hungry.
Cooper A. Gilkes, chairman of the event, said all anglers should take note: though the pond is stocked, it is closed to fishing today and will be closed until tomorrow morning.
The nonprofit club has purchased plenty of healthy trout from Blue Mill Stream in Brewster. The fish were raised by Dr. Wayne Miller, a fan of the Vineyard fishing tournament. Mr. Gilkes said Dr. Miller has dedicated a small freshwater pond to raising trout just for the club’s annual event.
Sunrise is at 5:30 a.m.; first light is about an hour before that.
The awards ceremony is planned for about 9:30 a.m.
“Everyone is going to get something,” Mr. Gilkes said. Top prizes will include trophies, fishing gear and two new bicycles. “We went all out this year for prizes,” Mr. Gilkes said. The bicycles were donated.
As is the tradition, morning hot dogs will be served to all participants, hot from the grill. There will also be hot chocolate.
