After a full month of bad weather, things got even worse yesterday, as a range of fast-moving thunderstorms brought downpours with lightning and in some places hail.

Golf-ball sized hail cracked one car windshield in Vineyard Haven and the Bunch of Grapes bookstore had its Internet service knocked out, possibly by lightning.

A sign posted in the front window of the bookstore said: “Hit by Lightning, Closed for the Day. Reopen tomorrow.”

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the Independence Day Main street fire that destroyed Cafe Moxie and nearly ruined the bookstore building. Owner Dawn Braasch, who bought the bookstore business late last year, said the timing of the storm was a bit eerie.

“I’m beginning to think we’re jinxed,” she said.

Fire Chief John Schilling, whose department responded to the call of a possible lightning strike, said it was unclear what had happened. We don’t know if any building was hit [by lightning] or not. When we got there, we didn’t smell smoke,” he said.

The storm did cause brief minor havoc in downtown Vineyard Haven where car and security alarms were triggered by the hailstorm.

“We had alarms going off all over the place. The police chief [Dan Hanavan] and I had to check a few locations, but there was no real cause for concern. But it did get crazy for a while there. This weather really has been something,” Chief Schilling said.
