Grocery Basket
It’s not an optical illusion — Cronig’s deli department expanded this week by sliding backwards. They’ve increased their selection just when most families have less time than ever to prepare meals.
We put all our eggs in one basket this week. No, wait; we put only eggs in our basket this week. When we did an egg survey in February, we found Island eggs for sale at Cronig’s and Reliable from Morning Glory, Christiantown, Flat Point, and Nip ’n Tuck farms, but now you’ll have to travel to the farms for local eggs. Still, there’s plenty of variety from regular to free range or organic. On July 29 we shopped for eggs:
Cronig’s:
Born Free cage free
Egg-Land’s Best cage free
Egg-Land’s Best organic
Grandpa’s
Horizon organic
New England Egg Farm
Stop & Shop:
Egg-Land’s Best
Land O’Lakes
Nature’s Promise cage free
Organic Valley organic
Pete & Gerry’s cage free organic
Reliable:
Grandpa’s
Nellie’s cage free
Quality
Shur Fine
The cost of eggs depends on the chickens’ lifestyle. The least expensive regular egg was Reliable’s Quality for $2.29 a dozen, the least expensive cage-free was Stop & Shop’s Nature’s Promise at $3.59, and the least expensive organic was Stop & Shop’s Organic Valley at $5.58. You can get both cage free and organic with Stop & Shop’s Pete & Gerry’s for $5.58. Cronig’s cardholders will get an even lower price on regular and organic eggs. Cronig’s gives a 10 per cent discount to Our Island Club cardholders, which charges an annual fee.
These prices represent a snapshot in time only; on any date prices may vary.
