As you know, some very famous visitors arrived on Island last Sunday. A big Vineyard welcome goes out to John Doyle and Iole (Nonna) Gardella, both of White Plains, N.Y., and Martha’s Vineyard. John had space in his car, and as I have not been driving because of the burns on my hand, he was able to give Iole a lift up to see her favorite daughter. They arrived at approximately the same time those other famous visitors did; I half expected to see Iole hitching a ride on Marine One and parachuting into my backyard. The granddogs were thrilled to see Nonna and have pretty much abandoned my bed for her bed. We already have visited with my cousins Lou Jannace and Lisa Quartiroli of California and expect to be dining with them and their friends tonight. This has become an annual outing Iole wouldn’t miss for the world.

By the way, my hand is now much improved and I am driving again — you might want to stay off the roads. The splint is off, but I am wearing one white glove with burn medicine under it; contrary to consensus this is not in honor of Michael Jackson.

Jim and Trude’s deck was in trouble with the usual Island mildew and rot. Scott Moorefield worked very hard on rebuilding it while Trude was in Florida, she returned to a nice surprise. Jim and Trude hosted a fabulous “deck christening party” last Saturday night and the improved structure held us all. The neighbors chipped in with delightful dishes of fabulous food. I would have baked my award-winning lasagna, but, since my accident, I realize God doesn’t want me in the kitchen. I wrote a commemorative poem instead. In attendance were Scott Moorefield, Chris Paffendorf, Bill and Jan Stokes, their daughter and her husband, Carrie and Ed Lau. Also enjoying the party were Paul and Margery Howes, their daughter and son in law, Julie and Javier Gomez Blanco, and the grand kids, Aidan and Olivia. This is a hard-partying neighborhood. I’m so pleased to be a part of it.

Aidan and Olivia, on their second sojourn here this summer, enjoyed the beaches, the fireworks, the Ag Fair and the parties. It was our loss to have Javier, Julie and the children depart on Wednesday.

Young Stephen Dunham went off on a new adventure last Saturday: he flew to South Dakota to help his dad, who is managing construction projects. Both men are so skilled and handy, I’m surely going to miss their presence here.
