Please Adopt Us

The column this week is devoted to just one animal — a nine-year-old retired seeing-eye dog and yellow Labrador named Susie. When she was retired from service she was adopted by a couple who, unfortunately, neglected her badly, and when she came to the animal shelter she was in terrible condition. She was covered with fleas and had flea bites over her entire body. She is now under the care of a vet and Lisa, our shelter manager, has taken on the task of bringing Susie back to good health so she can be adopted by a loving family. Lisa even takes Susie home at night so she won’t be alone at the shelter.

Susie needs a lot of expensive medical care, so we are asking our readers if they would like to make a donation to help with her expenses. This is above and beyond the normal expenses of running the shelter. Donations may be sent to the County of Dukes County, P.O. Box 190, Edgartown MA 02539, with a notation on the check that it is for the medical expenses for Susie.

Susie spent her working life as a service dog and now she needs and deserves our help.

The shelter is open Wednesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The telephone number is 508-627-8662. There are still many cats available for adoption.
