The wind, she blew! That’s the best way I can describe our northeaster on Sunday. Lots of branches and leaves landed in all the yards around town. Fortunately, we didn’t lose our electricity. Funny, but that was the first thing everyone said when asked how he or she fared in the storm!

We have enjoyed several summer-like days following the storm, bringing everyone out to catch a few more warm hours in the sun.

Congratulations to the winners of the annual Martha’s Vineyard Bass and Bluefish Derby ... as always, a number of Chilmarkers were winners. Cheers from us all!

A large number of folks turned out Tuesday for an informal meeting to discuss the pros and cons of the State of Massachusetts oceans plan, which includes windmills off our up-Island shores. Many were heard and there was much to consider.

Congratulations to Tom and Kimberly Schlesinger on the birth of their daughter, Valhalla, who arrived on Oct. 16, weighing 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The Schlesingers of Chilmark are now living in Robinson, Tex. Halle will be making her first Vineyard visit soon. Many folks many remember her as the cheerful former Chilmark library assistant.

Irene Tewksbury, library assistant, is back on the job after an exciting week of vacation in San Diego and San Francisco. She visited family and friends made when she lived in Seward, Alaska, a number of years ago.

Barbara Armstrong and Diane Morgan entertained at a luncheon on Tuesday at the Armstrong home in honor of Barbara’s mother, Roberta Morgan’s 80th birthday. She enjoyed a reunion of old school chums from Vineyard Haven. Cheers from us all!

I hope you will mark your calendars and take advantage of a new service at the library: the town nurse, Nicole Barlett will do free blood pressure checkups at the library from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Minnesingers will benefit from a concert on Nov. 7 by David Crohan and Katie Mayhew. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown.

The Chilmark housing committee wants to remind those who are applying for housing at the Middle Line Road homesite that the next deadline is Oct. 29, when the pre-qualification letters for mortgages are due at town hall.

We send condolences to the extended family and many friends of Mildred Flanders who died last week. She and her late husband, Robert, were well-known members of the Chilmark community and all will miss her.

The after-school program has begun at the Chilmark library and will meet every Wednesday from 3 to 4 p.m. There will be stories and arts and crafts featuring autumn in New England. All first through fifth graders are invited to join in the fun. Please call Irene Tewksbury at 508-645-3360 if you have any small pumpkins you can donate for the holiday crafts program. The program continues Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 11 and 18.

Halloween, one of the really big holidays of the year, is fast approaching. There are scarecrows in front of businesses all across the Island. They are the creative work of the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School students. They are fund-raising for an upgrade to their science lab. Each business donates to the school to receive the scarecrow in their location. This is the 10th anniversary for this clever and enjoyable fundraiser.

Other festivities planned for this Halloween in Chilmark are the annual Volunteer Firefighters’ children’s party at the community center on Oct. 31 beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the Chilmark library party on the same day from 3 to 5 p.m. Costumes will be judged and there will be food and drink and fun for all! The firefighters will appreciate donations of appropriate snack food and treats. Please call Katie Carroll or e-mail her at squidrow@vineyard.net as she is in charge of those festivities this year.
