Alexandra Susan Weisman, a daughter of Suzanne Steinfeld Weisman and Hugh Stix Weisman of New York city and Chilmark, was married on Sunday, Oct. 11 to Malcolm Hume McDowell 3rd, a son of Kathleen Otto McDowell and The Very Rev. Malcolm Hume McDowell Jr. of Harwich.
The bridegroom’s father, a retired Episcopal priest, officiated at the ceremony beneath the Gay Head Lighthouse. The Island weather cooperated as sunshine and wind blew through the chuppa held tightly by the bride’s sister, Jennifer Sullivan; her niece, Marguerite Smith; the groom’s brother, Drew McDowell; and his sister, Meghan McDowell-Vyse. A family and friend-filled celebration followed at the Weisman’s home on Stonewall Road in Chilmark.
Mrs. McDowell, 39, has called the Vineyard her second home since she was born, spending almost every summer and much off-season time on the Island. She is the director of Project Delta, a program run from Bank Street College in Manhattan that assesses social responsibility in children, and the director of education for the nonprofit organization, Spoons across America. She graduated from Bates College and received a master’s degree in education from Bank Street College of Education. Her father is an architect and a principal at Rivkin/Weisman Architects. He is also the founder of the Chilmark Road Race. Her mother is a psychoanalyst with offices in Manhattan and White Plains, N.Y.
Mr. McDowell, 42, is an assistant principal at a public elementary school in the Bronx. He graduated from the College of Wooster in Ohio and holds a master’s degree in education from Teachers College in New York. His father is the retired Dean of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and School in Harrisburg, Pa. His mother is a retired educator and director of the South Central Employment Corporation in Harrisburg, a youth education program.
The couple was engaged in April under the cliffs at Windy Gates Beach in Chilmark. They met a year and a half ago through Yahoo Personals after living two blocks from each other in Manhattan for the past 10 years.
