While other recent natural disasters may have drawn the international news media’s attention elsewhere, Haiti continues to struggle against widespread corruption and popular fear in the effort to rebuild itself in the aftermath of an earthquake that struck of the beleaguered island several months ago.

The Vineyard Haven library does its part in keeping Islanders updated on the situation faced by our southerly sister at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, with a free screening of a film, Burn!, followed by post-earthquake updates.

Loosely based on the Haitian Revolution at the beginning of the 19th century, Burn! weaves romance and high adventure into the epic story of a young island’s simultaneous struggle against slavery and fight for independence against colonial British rule. Of his role as a British agent sent to incite revolution on the fictional island of Queimada, Marlon Brando said in a 1994 interview, “I think I did the best acting I’ve ever done in that film.”

Following the screening, a brief discussion will be led by Shari Geistfeld, who has taught this film in courses at Macalester College. Jeanne Staples will then share updates of the ongoing PeaceQuilts Project in Port-au-Prince. Several quilts will be on display.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend. For details, call 508-696-4211.
