Anybody serving up a cocktail of vodka, Red Bull, Hydrocodone, birdseed and stool softener this weekend? No? Well, guess again, because Carl Hiaasen is coming to town and in his world, Miami of course, a drink like that is just for starters. In fact, his new novel Star Island begins with the sudden demise of just such an über inbiber. It’s anybody’s guess where the ride will go from there. What’s not up for debate, though, is that the journey will be hilarious.

Hiaasen began his long and respected career with the Miami Herald when he was just 23 years old. Since 1985 he has written his own opinion column and in his words has pissed off just about everyone in south Florida. Well, their anger is the world’s gain. Best selling adult novels like Tourist Season and Striptease, ah Demi we knew you when, Newbery Honor award winner Hoot, nonfiction books, Kickass and Paradise Screwed, all attest to a writer who is not afraid to make fun of anyone or anything. This time he points his pen at celebrity culture and a singer named Cherry Pye.

Hiaasen will be reading from and discussing Star Island on Saturday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore on Main street in Vineyard Haven.
