The Chilmark Historical Commission will present a lecture titled And She Alone Remains: The Past, Present and Future of the Charles W. Morgan, with Matthew Stackpole at the Chilmark Public Library on Wednesday, August 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Mr. Stackpole will present an illustrated talk about the only remaining American whaleship — now undergoing major restoration in dry dock — and her 80 years of service. Built in New Bedford in 1841, the Charles W. Morgan sailed on 37 whaling voyages. Seven of her captains, including her first captain, Thomas A. Norton, and many members of her crew were from the Vineyard.

In the 1920s, the Morgan lay slowly deteriorating at a Fairhaven wharf, until Col. Edward Howland Robinson Green of South Dartmouth came to her rescue. Mr. Stackpole will discuss her whaling voyages, her deliverance from abandonment and the current restoration effort under way.

The lecture is sponsored by the Chilmark Historical Commission and the Friends of the Chilmark Public Library. Admission is free. For information call 508-645-3360.
