Mary Jane Carpenter will give a free public talk on the history of Edgartown’s Carnegie Library building, at the library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25.

Mrs. Carpenter has acquired a deep knowledge of the history of Edgartown, through her own study and her work for many years as a title examiner for the firm of Reynolds, Rappaport and Kaplan. She is the host of a series of programs on historic Edgartown houses, which airs on MVTV. Lately she’s been unearthing the connections between Mr. Carnegie and the architect Frank Alden, who is credited with designing not only the famous public library in Pittsburgh but also the Edgartown Library, as well as several other buildings in town. In her talk, Mrs. Carpenter plans to discuss these connections, and to place the Edgartown library building in the larger canon of libraries built across the United States through the philanthropy of Mr. Carnegie.

All are welcome to attend this free program. Refreshments will be served.
