Art historian Peter Miller will present a lecture on the artist Philip Guston on Tuesday, August 24, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Aquinnah Town Hall as part of the Aquinnah Public Library’s late summer speaker series.

Mr. Miller has just edited the catalog for a traveling exhibition out of the Museo Carlo Bilotti in Rome, which is coming to the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C, in February 2011. An independent curator of 19th and 20th-century European and American Art, he has a Masters in art history from Williams College and a doctorate from the Institute of Fine Arts in New York. His current research focuses on Orientalism, as well as modern art and contemporary photography. The son of Edward Miller and Monina von Opel of Chilmark, he is well-traveled and a lively speaker.

Philip Guston (1913-1980) is a key artist who bridged the abstract expressionist and neo-expressionist movements.

The lecture will be followed by lemonade and snacks.
