Choreography Residency Unveiled

Go ahead. Fall on your face. Try something you’ve never done before.

This advice was given by the Yard’s associate artistic director, Lise Brody, to the artists taking part in this weekend’s Bessie Schönberg Choreographers’ Residency. But it’s something we all could take to heart, this notion of leaping into the void with no net. Right?

Well, if not prepared to cut the cord of the known and safe quite yet, at least come out and check out the group of artists who have dared to take Ms. Brody’s advice.

This annual performance project is the culmination of a four-week residency held at the Yard. Artists from around the world, as well as the Island, are given uninterrupted time, space and facilities to create pieces with no strings attached. The applicants are chosen from a highly competitive pool of international artists.

Featured performers include Gregory Dolbashian, Ximena Garnica, Marta Renzi and Yara Travieso.

Island artists include Claire Baione, Carol Loud, Daryl Owens, Sabrina Reppert and Maggie Sarmiento. Marta Renzi, an award winning inter-generational choreographer, directs the performances.

Residency alumni make up a who’s who of award winners and dance luminaries including David Dorfman, Roxane d’Orléans-Juste, Susan Marshall, Gus Solomons Jr., and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. This is definitely a chance to catch a rising star.

Performances are Friday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. (with a free family matinee at 4 p.m.), and Sunday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $25 for general admission, $50 for premium seating and $15 for seniors and patrons under 30 years old.
