Kristen L. Lollis and Brendon W. Bates were married at the Federated Church in Edgartown on Saturday, August 14. The Rev. Richard Fenn officiated at the ceremony alongside the Rev. Jerry Fritz, pastor of the small church built in 1828.
The bride, daughter of Stuart and Mary F. Lollis of Edgartown, has served as an educator in Massachusetts since 2003. Holding a bachelor of arts degree from Saint Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., and a master’s degree in education in moderate disabilities from Lesley University in Cambridge, Kristen now serves as the assistant head of lower school and director of learning skills at the Tower School in Marblehead. She is the granddaughter of the late Morton and Mary S. Fearey of Edgartown, as well as Ruth H. Lollis of Vineyard Haven and the late Maj. Gen. Shelton E. Lollis. Kristen was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in New York city.
The bridegroom, son of William and Lynn E. Bates from Acton, is a published playwright, producer and educator. Born and raised in Middlesex County, Brendon is a founding member of Full Circle Theatre Company in New York city, as well as BC Productions, L.L.C. His plays have been presented in New York city, Pittsburgh, Boston and throughout New England. His
written work appears in a variety of anthologies. Also holding a master’s degree in education in moderate disabilities, Brendon teaches dramatic arts and composition at the Carroll School in Lincoln. He is the grandson of the late Thomas and Eleanor M. Bates of Winchester, as well as the late James and Evelyn L. McDermott of Floral Park, N.Y.
The bride wore a custom gown of alencon lace, hand-pieced over duchess satin with a cathedral length train that bustled at 17 points for the reception. The gown was designed by Donald Sanders and handmade by Mariah Hale in New York city. Katherine Snedeker of Greenwich, Conn., served as maid of honor, while John E. Highsmith of Los Angeles stood beside the groom as best man. The bridesmaids included Taryn Bates, Caroline Cagney, Kristy Carlson, Abby Giles, Frederique Lollis and Mariah Mulvihill. The groomsmen were Andrew Galley, Jason Leone, Scott Lollis, Armando Ramos and Chad Welch. Lawrence Brown, Zulay Mateo and Christina Smith read scripture during the ceremony. Following the ceremony, Stuart and Mary Lollis hosted a reception at their home in Edgartown.
The couple met in Sittee River Village, Belize, during the summer of 2008, while they served as volunteer teachers in a small Garifuna community located about 15 miles south of Dangriga. Brendon and Kristen live in Cambridge, as they continue to enjoy their teaching careers, skiing and quality time with their families. Brendon continues to write, claiming that marriage is providing material for a new comedy.
