I give up on trying to figure out the weather. When I was off Island on Tuesday the temperature hit 74 degrees. And, as one friend mentioned, there has not been an October in a long time where we have not had a least one frost. Who knows what will happen next. I guess I’ll leave it to Don Kent!

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Riley Alexander, who celebrated his day Oct. 24, Dunovan Belisle, Oct. 26, and to Gabriella Carlos, who celebrated her day Oct. 27.

Margaret Pokomy from the Back Bay Garden Club in Boston gave a demonstration on bowmaking for holiday wreaths to the members of the Federated Church. Margaret comes to the Vineyard with 15 years experience designing wreaths for the Back Bay Garden Club, where members apparently do over 300 wreaths in one week of decorating and delivering. Margaret told the group that the wreaths are enormously popular and grace the doors of Back Bay townhouses and businesses through the holidays. For the past three years, the Back Bay club has raised over $10,000 each year, which is committed to their urban tree project and other activities in Boston.

The Federated church members hope that Margaret’s success with this project in Boston can be transferred to a successful event here on the Vineyard to benefit the 1820 Sara Mayhew Parsonage, a historically important home which is part of New England’s disappearing past. The Festival of Wreaths will take place at the Federated Church on Thursday, Dec. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. where 75 fully decorated natural wreaths will be available for a minimum bid of $45. There will be a $10 admission fee, which will include two glasses of wine and hors d’oeuvre.

If you have some time, you can put the Oak Bluffs Green Building Tour on your schedule. It is at 37 Circuit avenue (above the Black Dog) in Oak Bluffs, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. You can go green on a budget. Learn some cool ways to light, furnish, or remodel your home using a combination of regional sources and low wattage electrical applications. Check out Nantucket Sound from the green roof! Sponsored by Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Free, donations accepted.
