The Vineyard Haven Public Library has chosen Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food, by Paul Greenberg, as its Island Sustainability Book Club selection to be presented in the month of May. Several programs will supplement the discussion of Four Fish, all aimed at better understanding our oceans, the threats to them and indeed to the livelihood of many of Martha’s Vineyard’s fishermen.

First up, on Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. is a program called Pollution Solution: Safeguarding our Waterways. Called variously a rain garden, bio-swale or vegetative buffer, this landscaping marvel is one of the most natural ways to filter stormwater runoff to prevent pollution of marine environments. Tisbury Waterways Inc. details the installation of its bio-swale at the base of Owen Little Way. Learn why bio-swales are key pollution fighters in commercial settings or right in your own backyard and how you can “grow” your own rain garden. Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management’s Steve McKenna will speak on stormwater runoff, and Kate Venturini, from the University of Rhode Island, will share her expertise on rain gardens.
