The entire world is coming to Martha’s Vineyard. Yes, that is the way it feels each summer as the full ferries empty out onto Five Corners. But this is another event called One World Day taking place at the high school and celebrating the many diverse cultures of the world. It is a showcase of the multifaceted talents of the Island community.
Presentations will include Irish step dancing, capoeira, jujitsu, African American music, chocolate (the universal language of love), Jamaican hair braiding, forro dancing, a virtual tour of Indonesia, Islamic culture, puppets from Finland, and food from Ireland, France, Italy, Brazil, the Middle East, and many other parts of the world.
The Portuguese history of the Island will be presented by Kerry Alley. Herb Foster of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will present a workshop entitled Yiddish and Jive.
There will also be a scavenger hunt based on the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard.
The day will be coordinated by student volunteers and culminate with a soccer game.
