A large house donated to Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard finally made its way down State Road Wednesday in two large pieces and was delivered to the Bailey Park Road Community Housing off Old County Road in West Tisbury.

The house, at one time a store, was donated by the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank to the housing project. It was previously located where the financial services office for the bank sits today. The bank also donated the moving costs.

Neal Sullivan, executive director for Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard, said many people participated in getting the old house to its new home and they could all now heave a sigh of relief. He said the contractor hoped to have the house reassembled and sitting on its foundation by today.

When fully restored, it will become a three-bedroom home.

On Wednesday morning, a fleet of telephone and power utilities companies were involved in the move along State Road. A state police car headed up the parade.

Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard has built or acquired eight houses since it started in 2006.

Mr. Sullivan, who began the job as executive director last fall, said: “Of all the houses that we’ve taken possession, this is the most challenging. But it was the efforts of many people that made it happen.”

This is the second Habitat house to be located at the Bailey Park. A third will be started next year.

Mr. Sullivan said the future occupant of the home will have made a commitment of up to 500 hours of labor to Habitat projects.
