Gravestone Girls

The Gravestone Girls are coming to Vineyard Haven. Are you ready?

The girls are cemetery historians who claim as their mission to keep the dead alive. On Tuesday, June 21 at 7 p.m. they will appear at the Vineyard Haven Library to lead a virtual tour through the Vineyard’s 31 graveyards.

The girls are not strangers to the undead, having walked among them for years. They work with libraries, historical societies and genealogical groups, among others to teach about what they refer to as “the art, symbolism and history of these living history museums located on everyone’s mainstreets and backyards.”

The one-and-a-half-hour presentation is built on photographs recently taken around Martha’s Vineyard and charts the evolution of cemeteries and gravestones from the colonial era into the 21st century.

The library is located at 200 Main street in Vineyard Haven.
