Escape Via Siberia
At the beginning of WWII, as Germany invaded western Poland, many Poles fled east to escape the Nazi occupation. Before long they became victims of a secret treaty to divide Poland and found themselves under Soviet occupation. In 1940 many of them, including 200,000 Jews, were deported to labor camps throughout Russia.
This is the background of Anita Hotchkiss’ talk entitled Escape Via Siberia being given on Thursday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, 130 Center street, Vineyard Haven.
Ms. Hotchkiss will share the story of how she and her family were deported to Sverdlovsk province in Siberia. The family remained there until 1946.
Upon returning to Poland they realized that they were the “lucky” ones, as they had survived.
The suggested donation is $10.
