Freshly potted plants, new shrubs and flowers adorn the Martha’s Vineyard Airport, thanks to Girl Scout troop 80802, whose community project came to an end this weekend. The girls have been out there at least once a week since mid-April, assisting in weeding, gardening and planting new flowers in front of the terminal, the playground and the waiting area at Gate Three.

Girl Scouts take journeys to earn awards and this group has been working to earn a bronze award, one of the highest honors a junior Girl Scout can earn. This is the third year the troop has worked at the airport.

Along the way they learn about self-esteem, relating to peers and building character, troop leader Jill LaPiana said at Saturday’s end-of-the-year event.

“We’re trying to build up the three C’s in girls — character, confidence and courage,” Mrs. LaPiana said. “They’re a great group of girls.”

The fourth and fifth grade girls were taking away piles of leaves and weeds before diving into a pizza after four hours of work.

“We get to do new things every year,” troop member Coralee LaRue said.

“My favorite part is we get to learn new stuff about camping and we always have marshmallows,” Cassie Casey chimed in.

Alexis Hughes said she loved having fun with friends. “My favorite part of Girl Scouts is spending time with the other girls and having some good laughs,” she said.
