Walter Cronkite embodied words like integrity, honesty and leadership. For many years he was referred to as the most trusted man in America. In this spirit the Stone Soup Leadership Institute created the Walter Cronkite Awards to celebrate others who, like Mr. Cronkite, work to make the world a better place.

The Stone Soup Leadership Institute develops educational tools and programs to prepare young people to become leaders of a more sustainable world. Mr. Cronkite was their honorary chairperson for nearly a decade.

This year’s winners of the Walter Cronkite award are Meagan McDonough and Len Morris.

Meagan McDonough is a junior at the Martha’s Vineyard Charter School and a founding member of the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative (MVYLI). This past year she served as the initiative’s representative to the Cape and Islands Youth Congress. She was also a delegate to the institute’s youth leadership summit for sustainable development where she met with youth delegates from five Caribbean islands as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

Len Morris is the director of Galen Films which produces social documentaries with a focus on children’s human rights. Over the past 15 years, Mr. Morris and his team have produced Stolen Childhoods, Rescuing Emmanuel and The Same Heart, all films that focus on the causes and best practice solutions to child labor, children on the streets and chronic poverty.

The awards ceremony will be held this Sunday, July 17, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. The event is free and open to the public.

Delivering the awards will be Walter Cronkite’s daughter Kathy. Other featured speakers are Ray Ellis, Rose Styron and Ted Morgan. David Crohan will perform at the event.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. there will be a patrons’ reception for the award winners, speakers and donors.
