Artist Stephanie Danforth, one of the featured artists at this Sunday’s reception at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury, has an intriguing resume for an artist. For 20 years she worked as a pediatric nurse. She holds degrees in psychology and nursing and a master’s degree in maternal-child health.

But life is a long, circuitous journey. When not administering to the welfare of children she was off taking art classes and workshops. She began with watercolors and was accepted into the New England Watercolor Society. Later she branched out and began painting with oils and using mixed media to make sculptural angels out of old objects. She often uses gold leaf with her oil paintings, a technique she first learned during an art workshop in Italy.

So how does one blend two seemingly very disparate lives? “Every dollar I make with my art goes directly to help provide education for children in need,” says Ms. Danforth.

The opening reception is Sunday, July 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. It will also feature the work of Charles Gibbs and Susan Metzger.
