Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair

Jerry Garcia trading in some scarlet begonias for a zinnia sunrise? Grace Slick swallowing some kind of hydrangea? What form of madness is this you ask? Art, of course.

It’s a joint reception at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury for photographer Herb Greene and botany artist Peggy Turner Zablotny. The reception takes place on Sunday, August 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Herb Greene is probably best known as the, yes the, chronicler of the 1960’s music scene in Haight-Ashbury. His photographic portraits of the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, among many others are, well, classic. Sorry to use such an overused word, but these are the works of art that actually beget the word. That’s right, there was no such thing as classic until Mr. Greene hit the scene. See for yourself at the show.

Ms. Zablotny’s portraits of flowers are no less magnificent. She creates her botanical collages from plant materials and flowers she grows and collects. “What is most striking to me is nature’s brilliance,” she says in describing her approach to her art. “My botanical collage compositions celebrate the discovery of nature through the medium of original prints in order to share my vision with others.”

To celebrate her 15 years at the Field Gallery, Ms. Zablotny has selected 15 large size, unframed prints that will be available for 45 per cent off.
