The Vineyard Haven Library is not going gently into that fall season.

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. the library hosts a lecture by Saloma Furlong entitled Why I Left the Amish. Ms. Furlong was born and raised in an Amish community in Ohio, but decided she had to leave to pursue a different type of life which included a formal education. She graduated from Smith College in 2007 and recently left her position at Amherst College to pursue her writing career full-time.

Ms. Saloma will discuss what it was like to live and leave the Amish lifestyle.

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. poets John Maloney and Michael West take the stage. Mr. Maloney is a Chilmark stonemason who writes magnificent poetry. Recently his poem Good was featured by Garrison Keilor in his NPR show, The Writer’s Almanac.

Michael West has published and performed his poems on both coasts, taught poetry seminars at Johns Hopkins University, American University, Northeastern University and Featherstone Center for the Arts.

And finally, next weekend, on Sunday, Sept. 11, the library hosts a 5K run/walk to raise money for its programs. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with a fun run for kids starting at 9:45 a.m. and the main event at 10 a.m.
