Please Adopt Us

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has had a very busy summer; lots of cats, kittens and a few dogs have found wonderful new homes. The two darling wire-haired dachshunds we wrote about last week found a new loving home together. We are so pleased when cats or kittens are adopted in pairs. They spend so much time together at the shelter — when they go to a new home and have a buddy to share the adjustment with, it gives them comfort during the transition.

The shelter still has some lovely cats — won’t you stop by and see these nice animals? They are: Binx, the black and white sweet cat with long white whiskers who spends a lot of time in his “house” and really need to get out and get some exercise; Chloe, a brindle black and brown cat; Annabelle, who is black and white; Ceilia, who is all black and has become a shelter mascot and loves to be around the volunteers and staff; Murray, a beautiful, playful orange tiger; and his buddy Kevin, who is a Russian blue and white (they are both quite young, one or two); Penny, a sweet, loving two-year-old black and white kitty; and Bart, another all-black, two-year-old cat. All our cats are spayed or neutered and have had all their shots. One who is the mother of the last batch of kittens will be spayed soon and ready for adoption.

Shelter hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday through Tuesday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown at 3 p.m. there will be a concert by the mezzo-soprano opera singer Lia Kahler-Littlefield and pianist Richard Gordon for the benefit of the Polly Hill Arboretum and the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard. Ms. Kahler-Littlefield’s father, Albert Littlefield, was a well-known resident of West Tisbury whose property is adjacent to the arboretum. The concert is dedicated to him. Please come and celebrate your love for plants and animals.

General admission is $15, seniors and students $10. A silent auction starts an hour before the concert at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the visitor center at the arboretum, through Tickets MV and at the door. The concert is titled Songs for my Father.
