A youth technology and mentoring program called Digital Connectors is starting next month on the Vineyard through the Alexandra Gagnon Teen Center at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard.

Teen center director Tony Lombardi calls the program “a very special opportunity for landlocked Island kids to get a leg up on 21st century digital literacy.”

It will, he added, help to round out any educational experience they have and make them more valuable in the greater workforce.

A national program, Digital Connectors was created by the global nonprofit One Economy to deliver the power of technology to underserved communities. Sponsored by Comcast, the Vineyard Digital Connector program is free and all materials are provided. Applications are open to any Island teen age 14 to 21 and are available through the guidance office at the high school, the member services desk at the Y, or online via ymcamv.org. Classes will begin on Oct. 4 and run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ray Whitaker, site coordinator and instructor of the program, said, “Today’s youth just can’t compete in today’s workforce without access to technology and information.”

The challenging curriculum covers everything from leadership skills and personal development, to software programming and media production. The program also supports community development; each participant is required to give back to their community by training family members and residents on how to use technology effectively.

Deadline for application is Sept. 22. Once applications are received, an interview will take place.
