Hookers of Rugs

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, Rosalie Powell began a series of rug hooking classes which will run for eight successive Wednesdays. The first meeting was mostly a matter of preparation, gathering materials and grouping folks together depending on their experience. This means there’s still plenty of time to climb aboard before the real work begins.

The classes meet from 10 a.m. to noon each Wednesday and involve, among other things, gathering wool from recycled clothes. Participants are urged to comb through their closets or local thrift stores looking for woven wool; certain skirts and Pendleton shirts fit the bill.

Back at Rosalie’s house the clothes are cut into strips and pulled through a backing to get at the wool. New wool is also on hand for students to jump in immediately and learn how to hook and become more expert in the proper use of color and shading. As for inspiration on what to hook participants often head straight outdoors to gather the most luscious leaf, say, and use that as the basis for a small rug square or chair seat.

The cost of the entire series is $75, plus materials. Classes take place at Rosalie’s studio in North Tisbury on Old Courthouse Road.
