Sissinghurst Castle Talk

Sissinghurst Castle, located in Kent, England, is one of the world’s most celebrated gardens. In the 1930’s Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson created a garden in the ruin of an Elizabethan manor, realigning Sissinghurst with its Elizabethan past. Sissinghurst also had a past as a thriving farm.

Adam Nicolson, the author of Sissinghurst: A Castle’s Unfinished History, has been trying to reclaim this past and in the book he recounts his efforts to restore the working farmlands he remembered as a child growing on the grounds. In the book, Mr. Nicolson combines memoir, natural and cultural history, and his love of the land to tell his story.

Best of all he will be on the Vineyard this Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. to present his new book at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The event is cosponsored by the Polly Hill Arboretum, the Friends of the Chilmark Library, the Farm Institute, and the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society.

The cost for the event is $5 at door, or free if you bring a dessert to share for the reception following the talk.
