With sweeping support Chilmark voters approved the long-term leasing of the historic Tea Lane Farm house at a special town meeting Monday night.

The vote was 62 to 5.

This was the fourth time selectmen have come before voters with a plan to return the property to a working farm. Selectmen said offering a 75-year lease on the property as-is was the best option so far.

“We’ve thought a lot about this process and spent a lot of time talking about Tea Lane Farm,” selectman and chairman of the farm committee Warren Doty said. “We certainly urge you to vote yes on this so we can get a farmer working the land this summer.”

Voters agreed.

“I was one of the vocal critics of this when it first got under way . . . and I feel like if I was loud about that I ought to be loud about this and say, ‘Thank you, you guys have done a great job,’” Chris Murphy said. “I think this is wonderful.”

Voters also approved spending $100,000 of community preservation funds to renovate the 18th-century farm house. Renovation plans are subject to approval by the town historical commission.

A third and final article was also approved. Voters authorized spending $24,000 from the waterways improvement fund to purchase a new boat for the harbor department.
