The spring flowers and trees are in bloom most everywhere. It was a great weekend full of outdoor activities and more than a few grills were cleared of mothballs. The baseball field on Sunday hosted a youth baseball game and the tennis courts were also busy. Short sleeve shirts and shorts were the clothing of choice, especially on Tuesday, when the temperature hit 84 degrees. Lambert’s Cove beach and Seth’s pond experienced an early influx of bathers. It was perfect for outside chores and many visitors and seasonal folks came down to visit and or open their homes for the summer. Our weather continues on at a very welcome pace, but we could use a little rain for the garden. Susan Block spotted three white tail deer walking down Music street Tuesday morning just before they made a hard right onto the Newhall property. She figured they were out strolling and enjoying the spring weather.

The Vineyard Conservation Society reports that tomorrow will mark the 20th annual Earth Day beach clean-up. Volunteers are asked to go to one of the supervised beaches between 10 a.m. and noon. It might come in handy if you bring your recycled dog food and birdseed bags and gardening gloves. For more information call 508-693-9588.

Jeremy Berlin reports that the West Tisbury School Friday Night Coffeehouse is next Friday at 7 p.m. Listeners and performers are welcome. There’s no need to sign up, but please come early if you intend to perform — and don’t forget to bring a dessert! If you have any questions please call Jeremy at 508-696-3007.

The Vineyard Transit Authority’s summer bus schedule will start next Saturday. The VTA carried a record amount of passengers last year, and this year will likely be just as busy — or more so. The price of gasoline has skyrocketed in the last few months and we are now paying nearly $5 per gallon at most of the Island stations.

Lesley Gray of Alexandria, Va. and Panhandle Road arrived recently to open her house for the season. She attended town meeting on Tuesday.

Richard Knabel, of Panhandle Road, entertained a large group of library supporters Thursday evening who were pleased to get the positive results from the voters.

This is National Poetry Month and the library will host the annual community poetry reading on Sunday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Come read your poems or the poems of others and keep this tradition alive. The community reading will also afford you an opportunity to meet our new poet laureate.

On Tuesday at 5 p.m. Nicole Galland, author of The Fool’s Tale, will read from her new book, I, Iago, at the library. The event is free and refreshments will be served. On Wednesday the library will host a brown bag dinner and screening of Under Our Skin, a film about Lyme disease, at 5:30 p.m. Dr. Enid Haller will lead a discussion afterward.

Tom Dresser has a new book out, just in time for the centennial of the sinking of the Titanic. Disaster Off Martha’s Vineyard details the sinking of the Steamship City of Columbus in 1884, 28 years before the Titanic. The City of Columbus was en route from Boston to Savannah when it ran aground off Gay Head. More than 100 passengers and crew drowned in the frigid waters. The book provides personal accounts of survivors and details of rescue efforts.

On April 21, 1986, Bob Schwartz and his wife, Maggie, of Greenwich, Conn. arrived to spend the long weekend at their house on Music street. Their guests were their daughter, Ellen Tormey, her husband, Mickey, and their new baby, Thomas. Also Pat Ziprodt, the premiere designer from New York City, arrived at her home, God’s Pocket, on Edgartown Road. She was joined by her sister, Constance Zonka, and her son, Milo, of Chicago, Ill. and Lord Hanover from Hanover, England. She returned to New York City on Sunday to attend the opening of Sweet Charity, for which she designed all of the costumes. Lord Hanover departed on Tuesday to address the closing session of the United Nations.
