Nearly all of the Vineyard teams compete at home this week; of particular note are the sailing team’s races against Harwich on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Competition takes place on Lagoon Pond and can be viewed from Sailing Camp Park.

Baseball

The Vineyarders rose to the challenge of playing three games in two days last week, taking home two wins on clutch performances.

“Two out of three was pretty awesome,” head coach Gary Simmons said. “Things are falling into place.”

On Friday, the team fell 13-5 to league opponent Coyle and Cassidy, but rebounded the next day to take home two wins over visiting Plymouth South. The first Saturday victory came as the teams finished off April 4’s suspended game, which was called with the score 0-0 after 11 innings due to impending nightfall. After yet another scoreless inning on Saturday, senior Chris Morris drove in fellow senior Will Stewart on a two-out double in the top of the thirteenth to give the Vineyarders the only run they would need. Junior Jack Roberts no-hit the Panthers in his two-inning outing, striking out four and allowing one walk.

The second game ended in equally dramatic fashion: with the Vineyarders down by a run in the bottom of the seventh, seniors Ramon Espino and Stuart Hersh singled and Noah Stobie drew a walk to load the bases for pinch hitter Harry West. Following in Espino and Hersh’s footsteps, West also knocked out a single, driving in two runs to give the team a 7-6 win.

Stewart was the winning pitcher, striking out two in four innings while allowing one earned run, three hits and no walks. Starter Ryan Fisher pitched the first two innings, striking out two with two earned runs, four hits and one walk.

The team competed in the Westwood Tournament this week (scores unavailable at press time), and hosts Bishop Stang on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. They travel to Bishop Feehan on Thursday.

Softball

The girls moved to 3-1 on the season after two blowout wins over Chatham and Sturgis Charter last week, defeating the Blue Devils 18-1 last Friday and shutting out Sturgis 19-0 the next day.

The Chatham win was “a good bounceback win” from last week’s loss to Coyle and Cassidy, head coach Donald Herman said. “We’re on track to where we could and should be going into [this week’s] break.”

Junior pitcher Hailee McCarthy earned the win in both games, striking out seven against Chatham (two walks, no earned runs) and nine against Sturgis (two walks). McCarthy also made her presence known at the plate on Saturday, going three-for-five.

Junior Kendall Robinson was seven-for-seven over the course of the two games, with three hits (including a triple and a double) on Friday and four on Saturday. Junior Emily Cimeno went two-for-two against Chatham while achieving the dubious stat of being hit three times (“taking three for the team,” said coach Herman). Against Sturgis, Cimeno blasted a two-run homer, one of six extra-base hits for the Vineyard, in the top of the first.

Sophomore Shelby Lavin homered in the second inning of the Sturgis game. Senior captain Sarah Williston had two doubles, while junior Megan Buchanan and sophomore Miranda Tokarz had one each. Sophomore Emilia Cappelli had two hits, the first of her varsity career.

The Vineyarders’ formidable EAC schedule picks up again this week, as the team travels to Bishop Stang on Wednesday and returns home to take on Bishop Feehan on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Boys’ Tennis

The boys picked up two more wins — the 249th and 250th of head coach Ned Fennessy’s Vineyard tenure — last week, moving to a 4-0 record with sweeps of Chatham and EAC opponent Coyle and Cassidy.

At first singles, junior Kent Leonard defeated Chatham’s Devon Walsh 6-1, 6-0, but took three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) and two hours to finish off Coyle’s Kevin Dupont. Sophomore Patrick McCarthy won in straight sets against Chatham and was 6-2, 6-1 over Coyle, while junior Justice Yennie fought to a 7-5 first-set win over Chatham’s Nick Long before finishing off the match with a 6-0 second set. Yennie won 6-1, 6-3 over Coyle.

Both doubles teams blanked their Coyle opponents and won in straight sets against Chatham.

Archrival Cape Cod Academy visits the Vineyard courts on Monday at 3 p.m. The boys also host Bishop Stang on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Girls’ Tennis

An adjusted varsity lineup made little difference in the impressive end results of the Vineyard girls’ two matches last week, with the team taking home sweeps of both Chatham and Coyle and Cassidy. With the wins, the girls improve to 3-0 on the season.

Freshman Samantha Potter stepped into the number one singles spot, going 6-0, 6-1 against her Chatham opponent and 6-1, 6-0 against Coyle. Junior captain Annie Burton, playing at number two, was 6-0, 6-1 (Chatham) and 6-2, 6-2 (Coyle) on the week, while senior Wendy Wen, usually seen playing doubles, took 6-0, 6-1 (Chatham) and 6-1, 6-2 (Coyle) wins.

Senior captain Alyssa Adler and junior Dylan Brockmeyer teamed up in a move to the number one doubles spot, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chatham and a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Coyle. Number two doubles players Julia Cooper and Annabelle Hackney were also 6-0, 6-0 against Coyle. Hackney partnered with freshman Josie Iadicicco in the Chatham match, going 6-1, 6-1.

The Vineyarders travel to Cape Cod Academy on Monday, and visit Bishop Stang on Wednesday. They return to home court on Thursday to take on Bishop Feehan at 3:30 p.m.

Track and Field

Sophomore Jeremy Alley-Tarter outpaced 54 other runners to take a victory in the 800 metre run during last weekend’s annual freshman/sophomore meet at Notre Dame Academy, holding off Connor Murphy of St. Joseph’s by .14 of a second. Alley-Tarter finished with a time of 2:03.53. The boys’ 4x400 and 4x100 teams were sixth and 11th, respectively, while the girls’ 4x400 team placed eighth.

Fellow sophomores Joe Turney and Lily Neville were successful in the javelin, with Turney throwing 152’3” to place second (of 25) in the event and Neville placing fifth of 37 with a throw of 85’1”.

Julia Neville, a freshman, placed 13th (of 73) in the 800 metre run with a time of 2:35.22, while freshman Sabrina Reppert was 14th in the 400 metres.

The team visits Durfee on Wednesday for a dual meet.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Down one of their key offensive players (senior Colby Gouldrup) and struggling to overcome unforced turnovers, the Vineyarders fell three times in as many games last week, but looked to rebound against visiting Malden Catholic on Thursday (scores unavailable at press time).

The boys came back from a six-goal first-quarter deficit against Arlington Catholic on Tuesday, shutting out their opponents in the second quarter and rallying to a 9-9 tie at the end of the second half before falling 10-9 in overtime play. Sophomore Tyler Paulson notched three goals, with junior Nick Costello scoring twice. Seniors Charlie Everett and Denver Maciel had one goal each, as did junior Thomas Wilkins and sophomore Huck Burke.

Last Thursday, the team fell 8-2 to Sandwich, largely on turnovers.

“We’re forcing the defense to play too much defense,” said head coach Chris Greene.

The boys took on Norwell, a top five team in Division 3 lacrosse, on Saturday, falling 16-5. Freshman Spencer Booker scored his first varsity goal on an assist by Maciel; Costello (two goals), Everett (one goal, two assists) and Wilkins (one goal) also found the net.

The boys play Swampscott at home tomorrow at 1 p.m. They take on Bishop Stang at home Tuesday at 3 p.m.
