No more teachers, no more books. It’s the anthem of June for elementary and high school students who are counting the days until school lets out for the summer.

Then there are the rest of us who, free of the shackles of mandatory education, now look forward to the high season for the many opportunities it offers to keep on learning.

The return of summer brings an abundance of options for keeping the mind sharp and the spirit engaged: lectures, film, music, dance, exhibits of all kinds. And this month, the continuing education organization known as ACE MV is trying an innovative approach: a One-Day University that will bring together people from various disciplines to lead workshops and roundtable discussions all focusing on how to sustain our Island community.

It’s a worthy topic, and the lineup of speakers and subjects for the June 23 event at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is anything but dull. Consider these topics: Using Theatre in the Workplace, Eat your World, and Becoming a Skilled Change Agent.

Since 2008, ACE MV has filled an important need on the Vineyard, offering both practical training and educational courses, many of which are available for college credit. The One-Day University is an effort to really put community in community education, and we hope it’s a great success.
