In London, the Olympians are battling it out in feats of strength and endurance. Here on the Vineyard, we have our own contest coming up, no less feverish in its pursuit of glory, ribbons to the victors, too, but with the scales tilted to right brain activities rather than speed and brawn. Welcome once again to the All-Island Art Show.

The idea is basic and pure. Gather work from all the Island artists and present them in one place at one time. That venue is the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. The time is Monday, August 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The show is part art reception, part sale and part bragging rights. Bob Costas may not be in attendance calling the play-by-play, but who needs him as a filter anyway. Just walk right up to the show, meet the artists, view the work, stay for the whole day.

Better yet, come back the next day, August 7, for the junior art show. This unique tradition gives kids from all over the Island the chance to display their work for all to see. Parents rejoice, the refrigerator will be bare for at least one day.

But as fitting for professionals, you gotta pay to play. The entry fee for kids through age 15 wishing to display their creations is 50 cents per work of art, with a limit of two pieces. Entries are accepted between 9 and 10 a.m.; with prizes for all ages. The show rolls from 10 a.m. to noon.
