Summer Is. By M. Lesnikowski, 21 pages, Southern Lion Books, $20.
Vineyard-born artist-writer Molly Lesnikowski, who has written two earlier children’s books, has turned her pen and paintbrush to the Island, at last. This cheerful book has just about every Vineyard summer memory a child would want. There’s the old Islander steaming into the Vineyard Haven dock. The Shenandoah and racing boats aplenty are there to greet her. There are pictures of the Gay Head lighthouse and of starfish and horseshoe crabs and mermaids’ purses on the beach.
No child visiting the Island, of course, would miss a swim, rollicking about in the waves , or a trip to the Flying Horses. The Fouth of July fireworks and Illumination and starry nights over Vineyard Sound are depicted in this colorful book for beginning readers, too.
A graduate of Connecticut College, the author has studied at the Art Students League in New York Her previous books are How the Caboose Came to Rutledge and Greetings from Planet Wok.
