Heat on, heat off. Windows open, windows closed. Jacket and long sleeves, shoes and socks, sandals — I guess we have to keep both wardrobes out for a few more weeks until it decides to be fall.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Damon Vunk, who celebrated his day on Oct. 13; Kenneth Cook on Oct. 14; Reese McCracken on Oct. 15; Zachary Benoit, Angelina Campbell and Kylie Estrella on Oct. 17; Anna Bettencourt on Oct. 18; and to Caitlin McHugh, who celebrates her day today. Special birthday wishes go to Det. Sgt. Chris Dolby, who celebrated a milestone birthday this past weekend with family and friends in Falmouth. Sounds like a good time was had by all. Here is to many more great birthdays.

More birthday wishes to Chris White who celebrated her day on Oct. 13.

I have to explain about the picture that appeared in the paper by my column a few weeks ago. I have had a lot of people ask if Ralph and I both retired. Unfortunately, I am still working (I say with a giggle). Ralph was the one that retired, after 40 years with the water department. Also, I have been asked what he was holding in his hands. Instead of a gold watch, the men at the water department made him a gold water meter. I was told the meter was probably as old as Ralph. So now we have a giant gold paperweight.

The annual Minnesingers auction and will be on Friday, Oct. 26 at Farm Neck Cafe. The silent auction begins at 6:30 p.m. and the concert and live auction begin at 8 p.m. There will be hors d’oeuvres, dessert and a cash bar. The cost is $25. Something new this year, and very exciting, is the ability for anyone to preview selected auction items and bid on them online at 32auctions.com/mvrhsminnesingers.

A reminder that the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will hold its first in a series of fall and winter cultural luncheons on Saturday, Oct. 20 from noon to 2 p.m. at The Grill on Main in Edgartown. The featured speaker for the luncheon is David White of The Yard. For reservations, call Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.

Bow and arrow season is now on, so if you are walking in a wooded area you should be wearing orange. If you have your pet with you, they too should have something orange.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
